Reference Materials

The Internet offers a great source of information, and as a Karate-ka, it presents us with a wealth of freely available information.

However, while you can find a lot of good stuff, there is also a lot of junk out there.

For your benefit, here are a handful of good reference/instructional videos we've found (not a comprehensive list by any means).

Browse through these videos for general pointers about basic techniques. If you go on Youtube to look for Shotokan Karate videos, a good general guide is to stick with traditional Shotokan practitioners. The JKA (Japan Karate Association) is a good starting point.

There are a few vintage videos from Gichin Funakoshi still around, but they are usually of poor quality. Any videos with Master Masatoshi Nakayama are invaluable and very helpful. He was not only a student of Master Funakoshi, but a great instructor in his own right. Much of Modern Karate is owed to Master Nakayama, who also authored many books on the Shotokan Style.

Other worthwhile names with good instructional videos are (not a comprehensive list, but a starting point):
- Masahiko Tanaka
- Hirokazu Kanazawa
- Masao Kagawa
- Hidetaka Nishiyama

If you have other suggestions of videos to be posted here, please go to the "contact" page, and let us know. We'd be happy to add them for the reference of all practitioners.
